  • Design Director

Thompson is a brand strategy and design company with a digital focus. We work very specifically in branding but we are not limited by sector because we believe that effective branding requires the widest possible understanding of business, consumer behaviour and the world around us. So, over the thirty-odd years we’ve been in business, we’ve worked in just about every sector. This means that the people at Thompson are required to have a very broad-minded view of the world, equally broad professional and life experience and open, inquisitive minds.

So, the role of Design Director is really pivotal in the team and a demanding but very rewarding position.

Although Thompson holds a strong reputation for rigorous strategic work, it is essentially a design-lead company. Strategic rigour without thoughtful and powerful design doesn’t work for us. Thompson is recognised for a very holistic view of the brand journey and this is reflected in our awards record and in our reputation with businesses and the creative community. This all means that senior positions at Thompson require real talent, but the rewards are commensurate with the demands.

We’re looking for senior branding experience (at least 10-15 years in the industry) with a background in one or more of the recognised branding design companies. Obviously, sector wide experience will sit well with us, but we recognise that most other branding companies have specific specialisms. So, as long as you can show real passion and depth of understanding, we’ll know if you’re capable and ready to branch out.

This is also both a client-facing and team leadership role. Our team work alongside clients and present face-to-face most of the time. It works for us and means that we develop the kind of trust that allows both us and the clients to reach for more challenging and creative answers to their problems. So, an easy, but well-informed manner with clients is what we are always looking for in senior positions in the company.

It’s also an opportunity to inspire and develop the design team. The current structure has an Executive Creative Director in place, to whom the new DD will report and will help with direction. However, the Creative Director role is currently being held open for the Design Director to grow into, so there is no barrier to career progression.

Digital understanding is vital. Thompson has a substantial digital team and a Digital Design Director who creatively manages substantial digital projects. However, there is a huge amount of co-working between the branding, digital and content teams which means that everybody gains broad experience and has a working knowledge of all aspects of the brand journey. Again, extensive experience is clearly valuable for the role but a clear willingness to learn and get widely involved will also count for a lot.

We’re looking for a great portfolio and a body of work that consistently demonstrates intelligent understanding of the functions and concerns of the businesses you’ve been involved in branding. Creative work will need more that a design rationale, it’ll need a
demonstration of how strategic design has helped your clients move their businesses forward.

So, it sounds tough, but there are real rewards. Your salary will be a reflection of your experience, whatever that might be, and you will be central to the development and the decision-making in the business. Strong creative influence is powerful at Thompson
and is consulted not just in client work, but in the direction of the company itself. It is important to stress though, that the design director is a designer first – this is not just a hands-off role. We’re looking for great design work that inspires the company, the clients
    and attracts recognition.
