The art of battle

by

With remembrance day yesterday I was reminded of one of the most beautifully crafted depictions of battle, which doesn’t use gratuitous violence to sell the product, I cite the new Call of Duty PS3 game as a glaring example of sensationalism. The Pacific, made by HBO, on the other hand depicts battle in a respectful yet poignant way in their opening titles.

It was rendered by Steve Fuller and continued by Ahmet Ahmet, using charcoal on tracing paper and overlaid back into the provided original footage, the various applications of the charcoal conveys the forces of war, from scratches to explosive marks. The score by Hans Zimmer gives a dignity to the sequence. The charcoal dust is reminiscent to the volcanic sand of the Pacific islands which adds to the meaning.
